What makes a syllogism valid?

Method: A syllogism is valid when no possible arrangement can make its premises true and its conclusion false. Validity concerns structure; the premises may still be factually wrong.

Test category structure before factual content

  1. Replace subject matter with neutral category labels.
  2. Check whether the middle category connects the premises.
  3. Look for an illicit reversal or undistributed category.
  4. Separate structural validity from factual truth.

Follow the middle category carefully

The listed patterns are a learning set

Construct a counterexample arrangement

For an invalid pattern, imagine categories that make both premises true while the conclusion is false. The counterexample does not need realistic subject matter because validity is structural. For a valid pattern, every attempted arrangement should force the conclusion once the premises are satisfied.

After the form is checked, return to the real nouns and verify premise truth separately. A valid structure with a false universal premise remains unsound even though the inference operation is correct.

Boundary of the result

The checker covers the listed common patterns, not every form in formal categorical logic.
